Contoh Soal How to Thank and Express Gratitude FormallyIn this lesson, you are going to learn about how to thank and how to express gratitude in formal manners. Before you see several examples of conversation about expressing gratitude, it is better for you to understand its meaning and in what situation people usually use the expressions.
Gratitude means the feeling of being grateful or thankful. Expressing gratitude is very important because it is something that lets others know that you appreciate them for what they have done to you. For example, they give you assistance or gifts, they support you or they give you compliments.
When do we need to use formal expressions? In what situations and to who does this manner apply? There are cases when those who help us are not people who are close to us. They can be strangers or new people we meet on a trip, in a seminar or they happen to be older or more superior (e.g. headmaster, teacher, tutor, etc.). In that case, we have to express our gratitude formally.
There is one thing to keep in mind that being formal also means being polite. When you are thanking older people, your teacher, or your grandparents, express your gratitude formally so that it will sound polite and respectful.
Please read the following conversations, and learn in what situations that we need to use formal expressions in thanking to others.
Conversation 1
Situation: Faris is Endah’s senior in an English Club.
Endah: Oh my goodness, I will miss my train.
Faris: So, why are you still here?
Endah: I have to stick these announcements on the wall magazine.
Faris : If you don’t mind, I can do that for you.
Endah: Are you sure? I don’t mind at all. I’m grateful to you for helping me.
Faris: It’s no trouble at all.
The above conversation is between a senior and junior member of an English Club. Faris is the senior and Endah is the junior. Endah is in trouble because she still has to post some announcements while the day gets late and she will miss the train to go home. Faris offers to help her. To thank him respectfully as well as politely, Endah uses a formal way of expressing gratitude, “I’m grateful to you for helping me.” Responding to Endah’s polite expression, Faris replies politely, “It’s no trouble at all.”
Conversation 2
Situation: Mr. James Harper just shopped in a shopping center and lost his ID card.
Shopkeeper : What can I do for you sir?
Mr. Harper : I think I left my ID card when I was shopping here.
Shopkeeper : Is your name James Harper?
Mr. Harper : Yes, it is.
Shopkeeper : I found it and keep it somewhere safe. Please, wait a minute; I’ll get it for you.
Mr. Harper : Oh, I should like to express my gratitude to you for keeping it safe.
Shopkeeper : Delighted I was able to help, Mr. Harper.
The above conversation takes place in a public space, i.e. a shopping mall. Mr. James Harper is the customer. The shopkeeper talks to him formally even from the beginning of the conversation, i.e. when she greets Mr. Harper. Shopkeepers have to keep their manner politely and formally to customers and it is part of their service. Mr. Harper thanks her for keeping his ID card and expresses his gratitude formally by saying, “I should like to express my gratitude to you for keeping it safe.” In return, the shopkeeper remains polite and replies, “Delighted I was able to help, Mr. Harper.”
