Contoh Soal Responses to Agreement and Disagreement -
Agreeing and disagreeing are common to happen when people are involved in a dialog. To agree means to have the same idea/opinion with someone’s utterance. On the other hand, to disagree means to have a different idea/opinion with someone’s utterance. When someone disagrees or agrees with our opinion, we should respond appropriately. Now we will learn about the responses to agreement and disagreement.
Study the following dialogues
- Situation 1 : Wahyu and Candra are talking during the breaktime
Wahyu : I think we should tell our class teacher about some students who made graffity on the classroom wall.
Candra : I don’t agree with you. They will get punishment not only from out teacher but also from the school.
Wahyu : I respect your opinion. However, we should not tolerate that. Graffity should be properly done in the right place.
Candra : What about holding a graffity competition?
Wahyu : That’s a good idea.
Candra : Sure, it is.
Candra : I don’t agree with you. They will get punishment not only from out teacher but also from the school.

- Situation 2: Sita and Tika are talking about their new math teacher and math.
Dita : Many students like to come late. Why don’t they get up up earlier so they won’t be late?
Siti : I think that’s not the solution. The problem is our transportation system. Those who come late mostly take a bus to school. Many buses do not come on time. As a result, students arrive at school late.
Dita : I disagree with you. We should not blame our transportation system. We should introspect ourselves. If we get up earlier, we won’t be late.
Siti: I see your point. However, sometimes no matter how early we get up, we still arrive at school late. And it is often because of the bus. Hey, why don’t we make a survey about why students come late to school?
Dita : I agree. It’s a smart idea.
Siti : Certainly.

There are several ways to respond to a disagreement. They are, among others:
- I respect your opinion.
- I see your point. (However,...)
- I see, (but...)
- I know it. (Anyhow....)
- It’s fine.
- I can accept your different view on that. etc
Keep in mind that we should not respond to someone who disagrees with us abruptly so that he or she will not get upset or offended. We should respond properly. If we still want to argue, we can use the words in parentheses (however, buy, anyhow).
To respond to someone’s agreement, the following responses can be used :
- Sure, it is.
- Certainly.
- Thanks for agreeing.
- I have no doubt about it.
- Thank you for accepting my idea. Etc
When we respond to someone’s agreement, we can thank him/her by saying thanks for agreeing or thank you for accepting my idea, or we can ensure him/her that what we say is worth agreeing by saying Sure, it is, Certainly, or I have no doubt about it.
