Contoh Soal Disagreeing
Contoh Soal Disagreeing - Situation 1 : Rizal is visiting Hari’s house for the first time.
Rizal : Your house is very big and clean. You must work hard to clean it every day.
Hari : I don’t think so. We share the chores with all people in the house. So it is not hard.
Rizal : That’s interesting. So what do you do every day?
Hari : I sweep the living room and the yard. I usually do it in the afternoon.
Rizal : That’s nice, but I think it is not common for boys to do household chores.
Hari : I disagree with you. Cleaning the house, doing the laundry, cooking, and so on are not only our parents’ responsibility. My mother told me that sharing household chores will make us ready to be an independent person.
Andi : You’re right.

Mr. Hartono : How is it going? Are many students interested to submit articles?

Mr. Hartono : I see. May be the magazine is not socialized optimally. So a lot of them do not know about it.
Toni : I’m afraid I can’t agree with you, Sir. We have announced it in the Flag Ceremony. We also announced it in every classroom. Even, we put a big poster on the announcement board.
Mr. Hartono : That’s good. May be we should encourage students to write, then motivate them to send their writings. Why don’t we have a writing competition? We can offer interesting prizes.
Toni : That’s a good idea, Sir. When is it?
Mr. Hartono : The sooner the better, I think. Hold a meeting with the magazine board tomorrow and then make a proposal soon.
Toni : I’m sorry, Sir. With all due respect, tomorrow we have an exam. I don’t think all members will make it tomorrow.
Mr. Hartono : Fine. What about next week?

In situation 1 and 2, the dialogs are in an informal situation. Therefore, informal expressions of agreeing are used, for example :
- I don’t think so.
- I disagree with you.
- That’s not right.
- I’m not sure about that.
- Absolutely not.
- I totally disagree, etc.
Situation 3 shows how formal expressions of disagreing are used. In that situation, Toni expresses his disagreement politely or in a formal way because he is talking with Mr.Hartono, his teacher. Besides, the situation is formal . Thus, formal expressions of disagreeing that can be used are among others:
- I’m afraid I can’t agree with you, Sir.
- With all due respect,....
- I am of different opinion because....
- I have my own thought about that.
- Up to that point, I couldn’t agree with you.
- I very much doubt about that.
- Etc
It is important to remember that when we express disagreement in a formal situation, the expression is usually longer and not directly stated, because politeness is important. For example : I’m afraid I can’t agree with you, Sir. The use of I’m afraid shows politeness.
Disagreeing can also be stated formally without a negative word (not) such as in I am of different opinion because..., With all due respect,... I have my own thought about that and I very much doubt about that. Although those expressions do not have a negative word (not), it implies that the speaker does not agree.
