Contoh Soal Types and Characteristics of Public Speakers (MC, Host, News Anchor) - Do you know Choki Sitohang, Robby Purba, Daniel Mananta, Najwa Sihab, Irfan Hakim, Rina Nose, Michael Chandra, and Putra Nababan? They are famous in Indonesia. Do you know what they do? Yes, some are MCs, some are hosts, and some are news anchors. In other words, they are all public speakers.
In this lesson, we are learning about the types and characteristics of public speakers; how to differentiate between different roles as well as in what occassions each role is usually needed.
First of all, we need to know what an MC, host, and news anchor are.
MC (Master of ceremonies or ‘emcee’).
According to en.wikipedia.org, an MC is the host of an official or private staged event or other performance. The MC usually presents performers, speaks to audience, and keeps the event moving.
Host.
According to dictionary.com, a host is a person who receives or entertains guests at home or elsewhere. A host can refer to a master of ceremonies, moderator, or interviewer for a television or radio program.
In other words, a host is similar to an MC.

News anchor.
A news anchor is also known as a news presenter, a news reader, a newscaster (a news broadcaster), an anchorman and an anchorwoman.

Talking about the types and characteristics of public speakers (MC, host, news anchor), we have to know types of occasions. In general there are three types of occasions. They are formal, semi-formal, and informal occasions.
Formal occasions
- Some examples of formal occasions for an MC are a graduation ceremony, an anniversary of a certain university and school, a national and international seminar.
- Some examples of formal occasions for a host are a talk show on politics, a debate/discussion on general election, national and international beauty pageant (such as Pemilihan Putri Indonesia, Miss Universe, and Miss World).
- Some examples of formal occasions for a news anchor are a news program that presents serious and important news such as natural disasters (flood, landslides, earthquakes, and tsunamis), accidents (a plane crash, a deadly public transport accident), murders, politics, demonstrations, wars, and terrorism.
The characteristics of formal occasions:
- Very restricted
- There is an agenda (fixed schedule)
- Formal language.
- Formal clothes.
- Centered and focused.
Semi-formal occasions
• Some examples of semi-formal occasions for an MC are a visit of a government official, a farewell party of a senior official, a welcoming party, a contest in an informal institution.
• Some examples of semi-formal occasions for a host are a talk show on certain topic with various guests (there are politicians, singers, actresses, educators, and comedians in one talk show to talk about their inspiring experiences), a talent show (finding a talented singer, dancer, artist, etc), heart-to-heart talk show.
• Some examples of semi-formal occasions for a news anchor are a news program that presents sports event, a news programs that presents sports competitions.
• Some examples of semi-formal occasions for a host are a talk show on certain topic with various guests (there are politicians, singers, actresses, educators, and comedians in one talk show to talk about their inspiring experiences), a talent show (finding a talented singer, dancer, artist, etc), heart-to-heart talk show.
• Some examples of semi-formal occasions for a news anchor are a news program that presents sports event, a news programs that presents sports competitions.
The characteristics of semi-formal occasions:
- Less restricted
- There is a flexible agenda
- Formal and informal language.
- Less formal clothes.
- Sometimes serious, sometimes relaxed with humors.
Informal occasions
- Some examples of informal occasions for an entertainment program and birthday party.
- Some examples of informal occasions for a host are an easy talk on easy topics, music programs and quizzes.
- Some examples of informal occasions for a news anchor are a news program that presents something fun and easy such as Independence Day competitions in villages, and funny acts of animals.
The characteristics of informal occasions:
- Free in expressing him/herself but keep the ethic
- Informal language.
- Informal clothes.
- Makes audience relaxed, smile, laugh or generally feel good.
