Contoh Soal Information vs Opinion - We talk to each other every time. While talking, we exchange information and opinion. However, we need to differentiate which statement is information, and which one is opinion.
Basically, an information is based on truth and general facts, where as an opinion is based on what people think or feel about something. Sometimes, both information and opinion can be delivered within the same situation. This makes us quite not sure whether the statement is a fact or a personal judgment.
Let's see the difference from the following picture.
From the situation above, we can see that Bayu utters his opinion by saying "I guess she is our new class mate. I think she is American".
In the other hand, Jane is giving an information by saying "My name is Jane. I'm a new student here. I'm from England".
It is easy to differentiate between information and opinions. If the statement contains personal thought, we can assure that it is an opinion. In order to know whether it is personal thought or not, we can learn the common expressions in the table below.
EXAMPLE
- I consider this pool is too deep for me since I’m not good at swimming.
(Explanation: The speaker has opinion that the pool is too deep and he considers himself not good at swimming.) - According to my experience, camping is boring.
(Explanation: The speaker has an opinion about camping.) - I guess camping is a good idea to spend our weekend.
(Explanation: The speaker thinks that camping is a fun thing to do.)
Information
If the statement contains information, it does not need any personal judgments as mentioned in table 1. When we are giving information, we will tell others about the general truth or fact, . We can tell about: personal information (some one’s life), or any information about anything.

(Explanation: The speaker is telling about his personal information which is his name.) - This is my little sister; she is still in elementary school.

(Explanation: The speaker tells about an accident.) - Today is my birthday.
(Explanation: The speaker gives information about his birthday.)
