Contoh Soal Grammar Review , Supposed to, Have to, Should
Contoh Soal Grammar Review , Supposed to, Have to, Should - In the previous topic, you have learned about how to express obligation, necessity, and expectation. Here are three modal verbs you can use: be supposed to, have to, and should. Each of them has slightly different use. Here’s the review:
Be supposed to
In the previous topic ‘be supposed to’ belongs to expression of expectation. People, however, also use ‘be supposed to’ to express semi-obligation.
Here is the explanation:
We cannot separate the use of language with the norm, ethic, and culture.
Imagine you are going to visit your teacher house tomorrow. Your teacher doesn’t know that you are coming. What would you do?
- You visit her house without telling him first, or
- Tell him that you intend to visit his house tomorrow.
What would be the ethical thing to do?
What if he was at home? What if he was busy?
What if he was at home? What if he was busy?
You are supposed to tell him first. That is the right thing to do. There is no rule of doing such a thing, but people expect you to do so.
So, ‘be supposed to’ expresses one’s expectation of behavior based on cultural norms.
For example:
- Students are supposed to (stay inside the class even without the teacher’s presence)
- People are not supposed to (use their phone during the movie)
- Teacher are supposed to (be at the meeting by 13.00)
Have to
We use ‘have to’ to express obligation or necessity. The use of ‘have to’ is similar to ‘must’. What is the difference?
‘Must’ expresses stronger personal obligation that ‘have to’. ‘Must’ is used when the speaker expresses something which is necessary, while ‘have to’ is used when the necessity comes from the situation, such as rule, term, and condition. In general, using ‘have to’ is safer that using ‘must’.
- All committees have to (show their ID cards)
- You have to (register yourself to use this mobile application )
- She has to (come back tomorrow because the office is already closed)
Should
‘Should’ can express both expectation and necessity. It has a same function with ‘be supposed to’ which is to express one’s expectation of behavior based on the cultural norm. As to express necessity, ‘should’ express weaker obligation than ‘have to’.
For example:
“You have to take the medical examination as required by the company.” (If you don’t, you will not get the job).
“You have to take the medical examination as required by the company.” (If you don’t, you will not get the job).
- I should (start packing my clothes)
- You shouldn’t (come alone to the party)
- He should (go, or he’ll be late)
Do you understand?
Should vs Have to
‘Should’ is suggestive. It also means optional. For example: “It’s very hot outside, you should put up an umbrella” The sentence implies that you might or might not put up an umbrella, but if you don’t use it, there is a consequence for your skin to get burned. However, to put up or not put up an umbrella is your choice.
‘Have to’ is a requirement. It’s not optional and there is a consequence for not doing it. It also implies that you don’t have a choice.
