Contoh Soal Expressing Speculation - Speculation is a guess with possible answers to a question without having enough information to be certain.
Speculation is something that is expressed based on someone’s belief. Thus, it is like an assumption that is believed to be possible to happen. When you are in this situation, you answer it with speculation not a prediction.
B. Purpose of Expressing Speculation
Speculation is commonly expressed to persuade or convince someone about what someone believes although there is no evidence.
For example:
- The sky looks so dark. The weather is cold too. It may rain this afternoon.
(It is a prediction. There is some evidence to show that the rain may fall such as the sky looks so dark and the weather is so cold) - What a clear day! The sky looks so bright, but I foresee the rain will fall this afternoon.
(It is a speculation. The situation is on the contrary with its possibility. When there is no evidence, people may not believe it)
C. Use of Expressions of Speculation
There are various ways to express speculation. But, you should pay attention to its context as follows:
When you talk about what you think may happen confidently, you can say:
- I bet ….
- No doubt ….
- I’m sure that ….
- It’s worth speculation that ….
When you talk about something seems unlikely, but you believe it is possible you can say:
- I guess ….
- I foresee that ….
- I speculate that ….
- It’s my speculation that ….
But, when you think that something is not going to happen, you can say:
- I wouldn’t be surprised ….
