It is about persuasion; an intention to persuade the listeners or readers that something is on the right side or on the other side. In order to make the persuasion stronger, the speaker or writer presents arguments why something is considered to be right or not. In addition to that, the social function of this kind of text is to persuade the readers that the topic discussed is an important matter by presenting arguments or opinions that support the main idea of the topic.

The generic structure

An analytical exposition essay has some characteristics in its structure, and it usually has 3 or more paragraphs. In general, there are 3 parts in it:
  1. Thesis
The first part of the three is thesis. In thesis a writer introduces the topic or the main idea discussed. Thesis is always located in the first paragraph; it is where the author states the position or argument.
  2. Argument
The next part after the thesis is the argument. In argument a writer presents the arguments or opinions that support writer’s main idea. Generally, the more arguments given, the more reliable the essay appears to be, and it affects the readers to believe that this topic is an important matter or at least it requires some attention. This part is usually no shorter than three paragraphs and often regarded as the minimum number of paragraphs required to successfully support a thesis. The connectives such as first, then, finally are often used to make the arguments clearer and easy to read.
  3. Reiteration
Reiteration is the last part of the three. It is the closing part of an analytical exposition essay, and is commonly placed at the end of an essay. Reiteration consists of the restatement of the main idea or the summary of the topic given in the first paragraph. It is the final part that can also be called conclusion. The conclusion may start with a restatement of the thesis that is very specific, and can continue to be more general.
