In writing a narrative text you should consider the followings:
* Social Function
Narrative is aimed at making readers amused or entertained. The story is supposed to be interesting. However, it doesn’t always have to be a happy ending story, but it is supposed to have a moral value.
* Generic Structure
In composing/ writing a story, you will need to create the storyline first. In narrative texts, you need to follow a specific organization. There are some parts of a narrative story as follows:
Orientation:
This part consists of what the story is about, the character(s), and the place and time where the story happened. (Jack was poor, Sally was rich, they were best friends from a small town)
Complication:
This is the part where the conflict or problem rises. This one is also the main point of a narrative story. (When Sally’s parents did not give marriage approval)
Resolution:
This part tells how the problem is solved. It can end with a happy ending, sad ending, or even bad ending. (Jack went out of town and went back to marry Sally.)
Re-orientation:
This part is optional. It usually consists of closing statement or moral lesson. (Now we know that only true love will give us happiness.)
* Language Features:
Past tense (came, left, went, etc.)
Adverb of time (Once upon a time, A long time ago, One day, etc.)
The use of conjunction and linking words (When…, Then, Finally, Suddenly, etc.)
Direct speech (“I will always love you” said Prince Charming)
