Contoh Soal Debating , Stand, Argue and Persuade - In this lesson, you will learn about the language of debating, particularly to stand, argue, and persuade someone. At the end of it, you are expected to be able to use those expressions.
Expressions of Stance
From time to time, the chance for people to speak up their mind, to express their own points of view is getting more open. People can agree or disagree toward an issue, a policy, a decision or anything happening around them. People can also try to make others see what they see.
Expressions of stance are the expressions that can be used to express someone’s perspective. Those are the expressions used in communicating your own point of view about certain issues. These below are the expressions that you can use to express your stance.
An example of situation which requires the use of formal expressions of stance is debate. In a debate, you are expected to be able to convey your stance clearly and explicitly. Look at the example of the conversation below, and notice the use of the expressions:
Anto : I personally believe that the people who distribute drugs are to be executed.
Anna : From my point of view, I also believe it should be done.
Anna : From my point of view, I also believe it should be done.
A less formal situation such as a discussion between friends requires informal expressions of stance as well. Less formal expressions shown in the example below will do for such situation:
Bila : So, what do you think of the new Spielberg movie?
Vanni : Well, if you ask me, I think it is superb. The name of Spielberg itself gives the guarantee of good movies.
Bila : I guess it is.
Vanni : Well, if you ask me, I think it is superb. The name of Spielberg itself gives the guarantee of good movies.
Bila : I guess it is.
Expressions of Argument
When you are expressing your perspectives, your stance about something in public, likely it will be argued and challenged by another person’s. One thing you have to remember is that such situation is acceptable; there is no rule that guarantees someone’s perspective is the most righteous one. Arguments are healthy as long as keeping positive attitudes and speak your words wisely. Debating is an art of presenting facts and information in a way that support someone’s opinion or stance on something. The more convincing your argument is, the more likely people will believe you and willing to agree with your perspective.
Before you argue, you have to keep in mind that debating is not similar to fighting. Thus, in debating or exchanging arguments, the first thing to remember is that you have to structure your stance carefully and clearly so that people will understand or follow easily. Second, you can begin by stating a thesis and support it by giving claims and supplying it with plausible material. Finally, you can conclude your arguments in a graceful way.
You can use the expressions of stance and then argue about it by presenting data or theoretical basis. Below are some expressions that you can use to convey your arguments followed by the example of its use in conversation:
Anto : I personally believe that the people who distribute drugs are to be executed.
Anna : No, I’m not so sure about that. That would violate human rights.
Anto : However, it is because of their doing that our next generation is in the brink of disaster.
Anna : Not necessarily. It is not solely their faults. I think that they should be given the chance to be better persons.
Anna : No, I’m not so sure about that. That would violate human rights.
Anto : However, it is because of their doing that our next generation is in the brink of disaster.
Anna : Not necessarily. It is not solely their faults. I think that they should be given the chance to be better persons.
Expressions of Persuasion
In the art of conversation, persuasion means influencing other parties to believe in something or to make them agree to do something by giving reasons. Hence, understanding how to make stance, argue and combine factual information to persuade others accept your ideas is a very important skill. That is the essence of persuasion.
These are some expressions of persuasion:
Barra : I think this bicycle is not a really good choice
Fachri : Nope. I’d say the exact opposite
Barra : Why is that?
Fachri : It suits your needs. It might be a good idea having this
Barra : Hmm, I’m still not so sure about that
Fachri : Why don’t you think more about it and come back to it later?
Barra : Okay, then.
