SOMETHING TENSE ABOUT TENSES

English language learners often find some confusion in using English when it comes to tenses. Tenses in English requires the changes on the form of the verbs to convey different timeline, different meanings. In Indonesian language where this concept of changing time changing verb does not exist, some English learners find it problematic yet challenging to adapt the ideas.
However, it is important to use tenses because, as mentioned, they convey different meaning. Look at the sentences below to get some ideas about it.
I have one sister.
I had one sister.
In the second sentence the speaker uses the past verb *“had” which conveys the past situation in which the speaker once had one sister, in the past. But now?
We can also convey an order of some events by using tenses, and by using what we call adverb of time. Look at the sentence below.
Fanya arrived home after her sister Diana had eaten.
Based on the example above, the first event occurred is Diana finished her meal, and the second one is Fanya arrived home. We will come back for more details in this example later.

ADVERBS OF TIME

Adverbs of time are the words that change or categorize the sentences’ meanings by conveying the time when certain events happen. Adverbs of time describe when, for how long, and how often a certain action happen. Here, we are going to focus on some adverbs of time which help describe some event in the past. Look at the list of adverbs of time below.

Tips

Some tips in using adverbs of time
  • The standard use of adverbs of time is by putting it in the end of a sentence, but when one wants to emphasis the time, put it in the beginning of the sentence.
Anne came to my home yesterday.
Yesterday, Anne came to my home.
  • For the adverbs which describe for how long, those work best when put in the end of a sentence.
I’ve been working on this homework all weekend.
  • “Yet” is used in question and negative sentences to indicate that something hasn’t happened, but expected to.
  • “Still” expresses continuity of an action.

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER WHICH?

When there is more than one events in a sentence, we need to understand the sequence of the events. To do that, we need to pay a close attention to the adverbs of time. Look at the example below.
Before he bought the clothes from our online store, he called us two day ago.
In the sentence above there are two events in which the sequence is indicated by the use of “Before”, and it means that the sequence of events is:
  1. He called us two day ago.
  2. He bought the clothes from our online store.
We also can use the past perfect tense to show the sequence of past events, as expressed below.
Rinda had taken the medicine an hour ago when her mother asked her to.
In past perfect sentence, the action which uses “had” is the first one happened, so the sequence of the events above is:
  1. Rinda took the medicine an hour ago.
  2. Rinda’s mother asked her to take the medicine.
Questioning the sequence
In making question to ask about the sequence of event, usually the adverbs of time “before” and “after” are used in the question. For example:
What happened before he bought the clothes?
What happened after he called us?
