Contoh Soal Understanding Narrative Text , FolkloreWhen you were child your parents might usually tell you bed time stories. The stories are sometimes funny, sad, or even scary. Among the stories that most of parents usually tell, there is a story about a man named Malin Kundang. Have your parents ever told you about the story of Malin Kundang? Do you know what the story of Malin Kundang is about? Do you still remember the punishment the god gave to Malin Kundang? Do you know where the story comes from?
The story of Malin Kundang is about a son who was cursed into a rock because he was impertinent. He was punished because he denied his own poor mother. The story of Malin Kundang is called folklore. It originally comes from West Sumatera in Indonesia.
A. FOLKLORES
A folklore is an imaginary or fictive story (lore) that was passed down from generation to generation. It is usually told by parents or elders to their children before they go to sleep. A folklore was passed down orally or through verbal communication. A folklore is mostly a myth, tales, belief about the creation of certain places (e.g. mountain, lake, sea, and river). A folklore is not a scientific story. It usually involves magic or power from the God. Although some events in a folklore do not make sense, folklores are very popular. People loves folklores because they sometimes have moral values. Moral value is a wisdom or an advice which people can learn from a story. For example, in the story of Mount Tangkuban Perahu, people can learn that it is not good if children deny of hurt their parents’ feeling. In summary, the story tells us to respect our parents. The other examples of folklores are The Legend of Lake Toba and The Legend of Lake Bagendit.
  1. Example: The Legend of Lake Toba Once upon a time, there was a fisherman who lived in the Land of Batak. the fisherman was called Batara Guru Sahala. One day, when he was fishing he caught a fish. However, to his surprise, the fish could talk. Then, Batara Guru Sahala released the fish. The fish suddenly turned into a beautiful woman. Batara Guru Sahara Fell in love with her and asked her to marry Batara Guru Sahala. The woman agreed to marry Batara Guru Sahala and told him to keep the secret about the woman’s origin. They lived happily and finally had two daughters. Every morning, his daughters always brought Batara Guru lunch whenever he was fishing. One day Batara Guru was very angry because his daughters eat the lunch before he got it. they ate the lunch because of their hunger. Batara Guru yelled at them and said that they were like daughters of a fish. his daughters was hurt by their father words and told their mother about them. Their mother accused Batara Guru breaking his promise by saying so. She could not forgive Batara Guru. She was very angry that the earth cracked and the mountain exploded. Eventually, Lake Toba was formed because of the explosion. Lake toba comes from North Sumatera. Although the story does not make sense, but It is a good folklore that has been told by parents to their children to teach them not to break promise.
