We are happy when we make an achievement and people around us say that word to us, aren’t we? We can make others happy by congratulating them as well. This time, we are learning how to congratulate others and how to respond to expressions of congratulations in formal ways. Review on informal expressions is also discussed a bit, to make you see the differences between polite and casual ways.
First thing, we have to know whether we need to use formal or informal expressions. There are four factors that can influence the way we speak:

There are different topics we discuss we others such as a TV program, a film, a movie star, a football match, a journey, a learning material, an important class presentation.

3. What kind of relationship we have.
We talk to our friends, our parents, a stranger on the street, or a teacher.

4. How is the situations.
We are relaxed or very serious.

When we decide whether we should use formal or informal expression, we have to think about those four factors.
For example:
- The situation is: we are in the school canteen (informal place), we talk to our classmates (informal social relationship), we talk about our assignment for the following month (not really urgent of formal), and we talk about the assignment while drinking iced-tea (relaxed). In this situation, we want to congratulate one of our friends, we use INFORMAL EXPRESSIONS.
- The situation is: we are in the school canteen (informal place), we talk to our teacher (formal social relationship), we talk about class presentation the following day (urgent and important), and we talk seriously. In this situation, we want to congratulate our teacher for his achievement, we use FORMAL EXPRESSIONS.
