Contoh Soal Identify independent and dependent clausesProperly punctuating independent and dependent clauses in a sentence is sometimes a challenge even for native speakers of English. Read this lesson to learn about how to use independent and dependent clauses and impress everyone! Before you begin you should feel comfortable with basic vocabulary. You should be familiar with the following grammar terms: conjunction (coordinating conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs), subject, verb, comma. It will be helpful to know about relative pronouns and relative clauses.

A clause, as you may know, is a group of words that go together and contain a subject and verb.  There are two types of clauses.

1. An independent clause, in addition to having a subject and verb, forms a complete idea. It is a simple sentence. For example: I returned home.

2. A dependent clause has a subject and verb, but it does not form a complete idea. For example: When I got the phone call...
We are left wondering what happened after he or she got the phone call.

Often a dependent clause is an independent clause with a subordinating conjunction or relative pronoun added. Some common subordinating conjunctions are: after, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether and while. In our example "I got the phone call" is an independent clause, but when we add the word "when" it becomes a dependent clause because we are now awaiting more information from the sentence.
